Our busy demanding lifestyles keep these fight, flight, freeze, and fawn chemicals constantly flowing with little or time to recover. These signals are connected to the epicenter of our Limbic System and the Vagus Nerve. This 10th cranial nerve is massive and reaches from the brain into the gut. It is involved in relaying information from vital organs regulating breathing, heart rhythms, and digestion. It’s easy to see how so many symptoms can be speaking to us at once through chronic pain, shortness of breath, anxiety, fatigue, heart palpitations, insomnia, and a plethora of gastrointestinal disorders. The vagal imbalance is involved in often overlooked signs of excessive worry, social anxieties, lack of motivation and hopeless thoughts. These are Not Weaknesses. These underlying alarms and signals are communicating and seeking support for emotional overwhelm. Your body is reacting just as it should with reminders and signals that the alarms need to be turned off. If left without attention SSD or Somatic Symptom Disorder can become chronic.
